Ogala Lakota (Sioux) 1840-1908. A skilled orator and negotiator, American Horse advocated peace between whites and Sioux during the Sioux Wars of the late nineteenth century. American Horse was one of several Indian leaders who toured with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show. He is wearing a feathered headdress with white ermine pelts, bone vest, beaver pelt over shoulder, dance rattle, tobacco bag and pipe on his lap. Oil on stretched canvas.
